State of Decay 3 has been a long time coming, but it’s shaping up to be one of the best open-world zombie survival games in a hot minute. Undead Labs has spent years assembling it, and now it’s really taking shape, and previews have started emerging in the wild. Most recently, a stack of information regarding the game’s multiplayer mechanics dropped online.
From seamless drop-in, drop-out multiplayer servers to the elimination of tethering, and from shared bases to more settlers than ever before, State of Decay 3 appears to be going big when it drops in 2027.
State of Decay 3 is Coming Together Nicely
In a recently uploaded video, YouTuber Brian Menard talks about State of Decay 3’s multiplayer mechanics for around twenty minutes. He’s talking while gameplay unravels behind him, giving everyone a look at how this game will work, or at least, how it worked in the alpha state it was in when the gameplay was captured.
He spoke at length about some of the most important multiplayer mechanics in State of Decay 3, revealing that these core elements have been massively upgraded for this release.
For instance, Undead Labs has removed tethering from State of Decay 3, which means players are free to travel as far away from their compatriots as they wish. And, given that the map is ‘roughly four times larger’ than State of Decay 2’s biggest map, that ‘far away’ could be really far away.
When you play with other users, you’ll adopt a true sense of community, sharing bases and survivors in a seamless environment that facilitates drop-in, drop-out mechanics. That means that you and up to three others can share a persistent world that accommodates asynchronous play.
That means you don’t need to be online when your friends are, and nothing stops any of you from exploring and expanding the world you’ve created together.
Additionally, players will now be able to host up to three concurrent settlements, rather than picking one and growing it alone. This means that the settler cap has been boosted to 36, allowing users to have up to 12 settlers per base. And, of course, the usual base-building, crafting, resource management, and survival mechanics are all front and centre.
Menard explained that there’s a key focus on freedom, exploration, and looting, and it’s a game designed for longevity. That means those with a desire to build a base and evolve it, while defending it against dynamic zombie-based threats, will be able to do so for as long as they wish.
Community management has also changed, with users being presented with more dynamic roles, skills, specializations, and other options in their settlements. Managing people and assigning them tasks and goals is now more of a thing than it ever was, allowing for more autonomy in bases.
But, of course, if you want to go it alone in State of Decay 3 and just scratch out a living for yourself without any buddies by your side, you’re more than welcome to do so.
State of Decay 3 will be released worldwide on XBOX, PlayStation 5, and PC in 2027. Are you picking up a copy when it drops? Let us know your thoughts on the Insider Gaming Discord server.
